I was honored to be invited as a keynote speaker at the HETSA–JSHET Joint Conference held in Kyoto, Japan, on September 28–29, 2026. The conference brought together scholars from the Japanese Society for the History of Economic Thought (JSHET) and the History of Economic Thought Society of Australia (HETSA). In addition, members of the History of Economics Society (HES) were invited and  contributed to several sessions, making the meeting a truly international forum for the exchange of ideas in the history of economic thought.

My keynote lecture, entitled “Why the Walrasian Entrepreneur Does Not Maximize Profits: A Puzzle in the History of Economic Thought,” examined the distinctive role of the entrepreneur in Léon Walras's economic system and explored the historical significance of Walras's treatment of profit and entrepreneurship. The presentation generated lively discussion, and I was grateful to receive many insightful questions and valuable comments from participants representing different countries and scholarly traditions.

The conference was particularly meaningful to me on a personal level. Approximately thirty years ago, I attended a HETSA conference as a young researcher and benefited greatly from the warm encouragement, generous advice, and intellectual support of  HETSA members. Returning to a HETSA meeting after three decades, this time as a keynote speaker, was therefore a memorable experience. It was especially gratifying to reconnect with long-time colleagues and renew friendships that have endured over many years.

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Shin KUBO, one of the conference organizers and chair of the keynote session. His generous support and hospitality contributed greatly to making the conference both productive and enjoyable. Together with the organizing committee, he helped create an environment that fostered stimulating scholarly exchange and meaningful international collaboration. I am deeply grateful to all the organizers, participants, and colleagues whose contributions made this conference such a rewarding and memorable occasion.

2026年9月28日・29日に京都で開催されたHETSA–JSHET合同会議において、基調講演者として招待をいただきました。本会議は、日本経済思想史学会（JSHET）とオーストラリア経済学史学会（HETSA）の合同開催による国際会議であり、さらにHistory of Economics Society（HES）からの参加者も招待されてセッションが組まれるなど、経済学史研究に関する国際的な交流の場となりました。

私は “Why the Walrasian Entrepreneur Does Not Maximize Profits: A Puzzle in the History of Economic Thought” と題する講演を行い、レオン・ワルラスの経済体系における企業者の位置づけと、利潤および企業者概念をめぐる経済学史上の問題について論じました。講演では多くの参加者から貴重な質問やコメントをいただき、国や研究伝統の違いを超えた活発な議論を行うことができました。

今回の会議は、学術的な意義だけでなく、私自身にとっても特別な意味をもつものでした。今からおよそ30年前、私は若手研究者としてHETSAの会議に参加し、多くの会員の方々から温かい励ましと貴重な助言をいただきました。その後長い年月を経て、今度は基調講演者としてHETSAの会議に参加する機会を得られたことを大変感慨深く感じています。また、長年親交のあった研究者たちと再会し、旧交を温めることができたことも今回の会議の大きな喜びでした。

また、本会議の組織運営に尽力され、基調講演の司会も務めてくださった久保真教授に心より感謝申し上げます。久保教授の温かいご配慮と周到な準備のおかげで、参加者間の交流と学術的議論が大いに促進され、実り豊かな国際会議となりました。最後に、このような貴重な機会を与えてくださった主催者の皆様、そして有益な議論を通じて会議を充実したものにしてくださった参加者の皆様に、深く感謝申し上げます。
